The energy spectrum of trapped electrons predicted by the neutron-albedo theory waa tested experimentally with a magnetic electroh spectrometer for the energy range 40 5 E 5 110 kev. This detector waa flown on the State University of Iowa radiation research satellite Injun I at an altitude of about 1000 km in the inner radiation zone over South America. Another detector on the same satellite measured the directional intensity of electrons with E 2 40 kev. The data are consistent with a peak directional intensity of electrons in this region of N ( E ) lo4 exp ( -E/160) particles (cml sec ster kev)-l, or with a power-law spectrum with a differential exponent of -(1.0 f 0.2) for 40 5 E 5 110 kev. This result is significantly in disagreement with the predictions of the neutron-albedo theory.

Upper limit on the inner radiation belt MeV electron intensity
No instruments in the inner radiation belt are immune from the unforgiving penetration of the highly energetic protons (tens of MeV to GeV). The inner belt proton flux level, however, is relatively stable; thus, for any given instrument, the proton contamination often leads to a certain background noise. Measurements from the Relativistic Electron and Proton Telescope integrated little experime...

We present observations of the radiation belts from the Helium Oxygen Proton Electron and Magnetic Electron Ion Spectrometer particle detectors on the Van Allen Probes satellites that illustrate the energy dependence and L shell dependence of radiation belt enhancements and decays. We survey events in 2013 and analyze an event on 1 March in more detail. The observations show the following: (a) ...
متن کاملUltra-low-frequency wave-driven diffusion of radiation belt relativistic electrons
Van Allen radiation belts are typically two zones of energetic particles encircling the Earth separated by the slot region. How the outer radiation belt electrons are accelerated to relativistic energies remains an unanswered question. Recent studies have presented compelling evidence for the local acceleration by very-low-frequency (VLF) chorus waves. However, there has been a competing theory...

In this work, the effects of inner radius and width variation on energy spectrum and persistent current in hexagonal graphene quantum rings with zigzag edges have been studied by using the tight-binding model. Our investigation show that the energy spectra of these rings are grouped into subbands which each one consists of six coupled energy levels that separated by energy gaps. The pattern o...

Two of the largest geomagnetic storms of the last decade were witnessed in 2015. On 17 March 2015, a coronal mass ejection-driven event occurred with a Dst (storm time ring current index) value reaching -223 nT. On 22 June 2015 another strong storm (Dst reaching -204 nT) was recorded. These two storms each produced almost total loss of radiation belt high-energy (E ≳ 1 MeV) electron fluxes. Fol...
